Mrs. Hoffmann’s Middle School Math and Language
I am Karla Hoffmann. This is my second year
teaching math and language arts in the middle school and my
third year teaching at St. Gabriel and I love it here! I have a
bachelor’s degree in elementary and special education from
Northwest Missouri State University. I am certified to teach in
the middle school and I have my Masters in Education with an
emphasis in math and science from Webster University. As you
can see, I love learning as much as I love teaching. I have
been married for over three years to a wonderful man, Jared
Hoffmann. He works in the communications department of the
Kansas City Life Insurance Company. We both attended Northwest
Missouri State University in Maryville and both grew up in the
St. Joseph area where our families still live.
Middle
School Math
Middle school math focuses on preparing students
for Algebra and other high school math classes. We work with
decimals, fractions and percents throughout the year in all
three grades. They also work on measurement, geometry and
probability to different extents. In 7th and 8th
grade students start learning the difference between
expressions, equations and inequalities and are able to
manipulate the problems to find a missing number. They are also
starting work with integers (positive and negative numbers). In
8th grade, students learn to graph equations on a
coordinate plane. All students receive 10 points for each math
assignment and 100 points for each math test. Students are
expected to make corrections for any problems he or she misses.
Middle
School Language Arts
Language arts is a combination of writing,
spelling and English (parts of speech, sentence structure,
grammar, etc.). Students will maintain a writing binder where
they will keep all of their work. We will write 3-4 pieces,
then go back and revise and edit one for publishing. Only a
copy of the published piece will go home. The binder will be
shown at conferences or any time you would like to come in and
see it. We will have weekly spelling lists and tests. There
will be 24 words each week, 20 new and 4 drawn randomly from the
past week’s lists. The students will take a practice test
Monday and retake only the words they missed plus the additional
4 on Friday.
One
other exciting addition to both math and language is the Smart
Board. This is an interactive piece of technology that allows
me to turn my computer into a large touch screen computer. We
are able to do interactive activities as a class that relate to
both subject areas.
